Preparing Parts for Powder Coating Services

The importance of meticulous preparation before powder coating cannot be overstated. If any oil or dirt lingers on the surface of your part, the powder coat will not adhere well. 

Our fool-proof cleaning process ensures a consistent, long-lasting powder coat every time. Here are the steps we take:

1. We rinse the parts in a solution that removes oils and debris. 
2. We soak the parts in a phosphate tank, adding a protective layer that boosts corrosion resistance and powder adherence. 
3. We bake the parts in an oven to dry them thoroughly, which evaporates any remaining oils or fingerprints introduced during the washing process. 
4. If necessary, we sand or grind parts that come to us with blemishes to prevent imperfections from showing through the powder coating. We’re one of the few sheet metal finishing shops with in-house machining capabilities to remove surface imperfections—it’s just another way we go the extra mile to get the best results for our customers.  

Optimal Coating Environment

Environmental factors, particularly air quality, can significantly impact powder coating results. We take measures to control workspace humidity, for example, as it can affect the adherence of the coating. We also ensure proper airflow and filtration in our shop to help prevent dust from attaching to the finish prior to curing. 

Finally, we equip each finishing booth with an air hose to remove any contaminants that might sneak in at the last minute before the powder is applied.

Well-Maintained Workspace and Equipment

The surfaces of paint booths and equipment must be kept free of dirt and debris to ensure optimal powder coating services. 

For instance, residue on the hanging racks can prevent the powder from adhering properly to the areas where the part contacts the hook or pole. Our process includes removing any buildup that occurs on the poles and hooks where parts hang during powder coating—a task we perform between each job. 

In addition, we refresh our powder guns regularly, replacing worn-out parts to ensure even and consistent spraying. 

Extensive Team Training

All Powder Coat & Screen team members are rigorously trained to select the best powder gun settings and application methods for a wide range of parts. Our employees understand the nuances of nozzle pressure and spraying distance and how these and other factors affect the quality of the powder coating.
